Diesel No-Start Diagnostics: Cranks But Won't Start
A diesel needs four things to fire: cranking speed, clean fuel at pressure, air, and compression. A no-start diagnosis is just finding which one is missing, in that order, without guessing.

Step 1 — Crank speed and battery voltage under load
Measure voltage at the starter while cranking, not at the batteries at rest. If cranking voltage drops below roughly 9.6 volts on a 12-volt system, or crank rpm is below the ECM's minimum to authorize fuel, nothing downstream matters. Bad cable connections and one weak battery in a bank of four cause more no-starts than fuel systems do.
Step 2 — Does the ECM see the engine turning?
Watch engine speed on the scan tool while cranking. If rpm reads zero while the engine is clearly turning, the crank or cam position signal is missing — a failed sensor, a chafed harness, or debris on the tone wheel. The ECM will not command fuel without a position signal, and it may not set a code until it has cranked long enough.
Step 3 — Fuel supply, then rail pressure
Check for air in the supply: a clear line or a hand-primer that never firms up points at a leak on the suction side, usually at a filter seal or a cracked line. Then look at actual rail pressure during crank against the minimum the ECM needs to fire. Low rail pressure with a good supply is a pump, a pressure-relief valve that is dumping, or an injector with an excessive return.
Step 4 — Return flow test tells you which injector
With the return lines individually collected during crank, one injector returning far more fuel than the others is dumping rail pressure to tank. That is a bolt-on test that costs nothing and saves a full injector set.
Step 5 — Air and compression
Pull the air filter restriction reading and physically check for a collapsed inlet boot or a filter packed solid. If crank speed, fuel, and air all check out, do a compression or cylinder-cutout test before condemning the pump. A fresh engine that has jumped time will pass every electrical test you throw at it.
Cold-weather no-starts
- Gelled fuel — cloudy fuel in the filter bowl, restriction climbing, engine fires then dies.
- Failed grid heater or glow relay — check current draw, not just the command.
- Frozen DEF lines will not stop a start, but they will set faults during the warm-up.
- Thin oil circulation on a very cold soak drags crank speed below the fuel threshold.

- Why does my diesel crank but not start?
- Most commonly low cranking speed from batteries or cables, air in the fuel supply, or a missing crank or cam position signal. Check cranking voltage and scan-tool rpm before doing anything to the fuel system.
- How do I know if I have air in the fuel system?
- Install a clear section of hose on the supply side and crank. Bubbles mean a suction-side leak — usually a filter seal, a cracked line, or a loose fitting between the tank and the pump.
- Can a bad DPF cause a no-start?
- A completely blocked exhaust can, but it is rare and it usually presents as a start-and-stall with very high exhaust back pressure. Rule out fuel, air, and crank speed first.
