The ECM knows the circuit or system is wrong but cannot classify how. Treat it as a general failure of that SPN and diagnose from the component out.
Common causes
- Multiple overlapping faults
- Wiring fault outside the ECM's detection logic
- Failing component with an unusual failure pattern
- Software or calibration mismatch
What to test, in order
- Record and clear codes, then reproduce the condition to see what returns first
- Diagnose the SPN's component and circuit end to end
- Check for outstanding ECM calibration updates
- Look for a companion code with a clearer FMI and start there
