Buying your first truck without getting burned
Inspect the truck like it is already yours, and price the repairs you find into the offer instead of hoping they never happen.

Before you hand over money
- Pull ECM data — engine hours, idle percentage, fault history and actual fuel economy tell the real story.
- Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection at a shop you picked, not the seller's.
- Check aftertreatment history. A DPF and SCR system due for a full service is a five-figure surprise.
- Inspect frame rails, crossmembers and suspension for cracks or old welds.
- Verify the title, mileage and any liens before any deposit.
Budget for the truth
Set aside a repair reserve from day one — a fixed number of cents per mile into a separate account. The trucks that break owner-operators are not the ones that break down; they are the ones with no reserve when they do.
Lease purchase caution
Read what happens if you miss a week: who pays the note when the truck is in the shop, what the balloon payment is, and who owns the maintenance escrow if you walk away.
