Clutch and transmission symptoms decoded
Slipping, dragging and hard shifting each point at a different part of the system. Name the symptom precisely and the diagnosis is short.

Match the symptom
- Slipping — engine rpm climbs without matching road speed. Worn disc, oil contamination or no free play left.
- Dragging — hard to get into gear from a stop, grinding on the shift. Too much free play, a failing clutch brake, or a hydraulic or linkage problem.
- Hard shifting between gears — usually driver technique, engine rpm mismatch, or shift linkage and air-system issues on a range shift.
- Automated manual clunking or slow shifts — check for stored transmission codes and clutch actuator calibration before condemning hardware.
Before the shop
Check clutch free play at the pedal and adjust to spec. On an automated manual, run the calibration routine after any clutch work — skipping it causes exactly the complaints that get blamed on the new clutch.
