Why won't my truck complete a regen?

A regen needs heat, fuel, air and a healthy sensor picture. If any one of those is missing the ECM aborts and soot keeps stacking until you get a derate.

The answer

What has to be true before a regen will run

  • Coolant temperature at operating range — a stuck-open thermostat alone will block a parked regen.
  • No active faults on the DEF system, EGR, VGT turbo or exhaust temperature sensors.
  • Enough fuel in the tank (most ECMs want roughly a quarter tank or more).
  • Parking brake set, transmission in neutral, no throttle input for a parked regen.

Check in this order

  1. Pull all active and inactive codes — aftertreatment, engine and DEF controller. Fix the oldest root fault first, not the newest symptom code.
  2. Watch DPF inlet and outlet temperature live. If inlet temp barely climbs, the doser or the seventh injector is not delivering fuel.
  3. Compare DPF differential pressure to spec at idle. A face-plugged filter that reads high at idle usually needs a bake and clean, not another regen.
  4. Verify EGR valve position and VGT actuator movement — a stuck EGR keeps exhaust temperature too low to light off.
  5. Inspect for exhaust leaks between turbo and DPF. Any leak upstream dumps the heat the filter needs.

Do not replace yet

  • Do not throw a DPF at it until you have proven the doser, the thermostat and the temperature sensors.
  • Do not clear codes to make the dash light go out — you lose the freeze-frame data the shop needs.

Can you keep driving?

An amber lamp with high soot means get it into a regen or a shop soon. A red lamp with a derate means the truck will slow itself down and you should plan your stop rather than have one picked for you.
