Loss of power and boost — turbo and VGT checks
Low power with no codes is usually a leak or a restriction. Low power with a VGT code is usually soot-stuck vanes or an actuator that cannot move them.
The answer
Check first
- Compare commanded boost with actual boost on live data at full throttle under load.
- Pressure-test the charge air cooler and boots. A pinhole in a boot behaves exactly like a dead turbo.
- Check air filter restriction and exhaust back pressure — a plugged DPF strangles the engine.
- Command the VGT actuator through its sweep with the service tool and watch for a slow or stuck response.
- Inspect turbo shaft play: side-to-side is expected within spec, in-and-out play is not.
Do not replace yet
Do not replace a turbo because it makes noise. Whistles are usually leaks; a failed turbo normally shows shaft play, oil in the charge pipe, or damaged blades.
